Ethiopia and U.S. Support
Tired of your tax dollars being used to support war, dictators, and
human rights abuses in the name of the "war on terror"?
Now is a critical time: there is a window of opportunity during which we can rein in U.S. financial support of the brutal regime in Ethiopia and help avert human catastrophe. So far the Bush Administration has only turned a blind eye.
Ethiopia is among the top five recipients of U.S. aid, receiving annually over 500 million dollars, much of which is military support.
Currently our tax dollars to Ethiopia fund regional destabilization, widespread human rights abuses, and mass atrocities committed by the Ethiopian government in the Ogaden that are leading to a humanitarian crisis. The Bush Administration supports the Ethiopian government's brutality because it is a key ally in the "war on terror."
However, the U.S. Congress is pressing for change. A bill, H.R. 2003, was passed by the House of Representatives in October to tie future U.S. aid to democratic reforms and encourage a stable, secure and economically viable future for this jeopardized region.
Now H.R.2003 is before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
We have a unique window of opportunity to stop harmful U.S. foreign policy toward Ethiopia and we need your help:
Ask your Senator to consider and pass H.R. 2003
